Honesty had a kit today - a royal blue male - unfortuantely he seemd ot be premature. He was breathing at first but soon ceased.
He weighed only 20g :( she delivered the afterbirth fine but no more kits appeared.
The kit being a royal blue proved that she does carry the sapphire gene - something that was not certain before as her parents had been a std sapphire carrier and a black velvet sapphire carrier.
Weighing all the chins today suggests thata small number are pregnant at the moment - most of them being from the charcoal and sapphire related lines - so a variety of carriers and some chances of full recessives are due soon, though honesty was the only chance of a ryoal still to come from present pairings.
I alao listed for sale more of my kits today on my web page: www.greenwoodchinchillas.co.ukCurrent Mood: happy

Well my ideas to keep this updated really have been not working!
Life been really busy - chins coming and going with a lot of changes to pairings and babies being produced.
The sapphire and charcoal lines have produced a wide number of carriers and some full recessives - from a variety of pairings producing a mucch wider geen pool of carriers to work with next year when they have matured and been evaluated and paired.
A baby boom has truly been in flow - standard, beige, charcoal, ebony, ebony white, sapphire, royal blue, sapph and char carriers, black velvets, white, and pink whites
Many ofwhich are now for sale due to the limited space availalbe herer - which must be focused on keeping and raising the charcoal and sapphire related animals to keep improving the strength and quality of theese rare lines. Many are from good show lines nd ribbon winning parents - and the american imported males have produced many excellent offspring to increase the gene pool of the UK animals held.
The ebony lines are being sold on again after having arrived as part of other herd purchases over the last few months, now that they have had their kits they can be safely rehomed to people focusing on these colours.
The show season is now only 8 weeks away - and its time to start working on preparing the animals in time for them. Lots of grooming, sand baths and preparation is to be done in the hope that some of the kits can show well and procude the awards I feel they can acheive.Current Mood: happy

Unfortunately Sago did not make it through.
He was alive and took a rasiin at 7o clock yesterday morning but when i came to collect himfrom his cage to go to the vets he had died.
Rue went back with regards to her eyes and the wounds on her head and teh vet was impressed with how wewll she is doing, she is to keep taking hte medication and eye drops and hopefully shall make a good recovery. The tip of her ear has fell off where it wsa not receiving enough blood - so she wont win any beuty pageants now but hopefully the eye will be saved.
Today saw the arrival of two litters of kits:
Maddie had twins to Rampian - so the kits are totally non UK lines. Mum being from German and Dutch lines, and Dad being American - they will make good additions to the herd for hte genetic diversity that they can create in the lines - fur density and veiling should be very good. The have been named Feverfew and Filbert (one male and one female), Feverfew is the larger and darker at 52g and Filbert was 50g.
Myrtle, the BV from Carter Chinchillas that was a fur chewer but stopped since arriving here - has also had a kit. A BV male - 54g - called Boldo :) |
|
Unfortunatelythe little homo eb is looking weaker and weaker - he is due back at the vets in the morning and im really not hopeful about the chances of him returning home. The antibiotics dont seemto have kicked in well enough and the abcess despite being drained regularly islooknig worse and worse.
Thankfully Rue is looking better - her eye drops and flase tears seem to be doing a good job :)
Marg had trilets born today - Dillon my male is the dad as he has been ther on loan :) |
» Web Site Redesgin
We are currently in the process of redesgining the whole of hte web site - it was done once but i changed my mind on the new desgin so have had to start all again
Hopefully in the next few weeks the old information should all be moved to the new format and new pages added for the new release - hopefully it will be more streamlined for peopel to find theire way round.
BUT unfortuantely a lot of hte information regarding our aniamsl will be disappearing from the site. Some ofthe narrowm inded people who breed or keep chins and choose to use certain forums, have been using information on the chins here to make assumptions thatare incoreent and spreading malicious gossip about the chins here and the practices unfder whihc htehy are kept and managed - so regretably it has been decided that in order to minise the problems that these people can cause they shall have less information to make false assumptions about.
So as sad as that is, there will still be some on the site and information for people to find - and if anyone really wants ot know anything then feel free to write and ask :) If anyone has a legitimate question to ak then im always willing to discuss anything im doing - and they are more than welcome to come along and meet the animals and see my set up if they should choose :)
At present it seems from my own pairings and the females fro mthe Carter herd, that there are 10 pregnant females - as well as the kit already born So we are seeing a bit of a baby boom at present! for this reeason we are resellling and rehoming some of the animals we consider are better off homed as pets and not for breeding, and shall shortly be loking at lreasing some of hte good pedigree breedimng females to great more space - i have a list of BVs, Beige and Stds at present that I am working out to see who i can release and who i just cant part with. Its a very difficult decision to make but I have to redcue down the numbers to make way for the kits growing up.

» More updates
Well thius month seems to have been a vets bill month - thankfully not something that happens too often!
First molly came down with a uterus infection and required vet care and attention - along with a ultrasound scan. Thankfullty she seems ot have recovered now though they have said that it is likely to reoccur and she is unlikely ot get pregnant - it has been suggested that should it reoocur frequently then it may be necessary to perform a hysterectomy. I shall be keeping a close eye on her in the near future- she has been moved out of breeding areas in to hte granny cage for now so she gets to start her reitrement early.
This last week also saw Rue, the american imported Black Velvet, being attced by a male that she had been too for a while- i think it was acutally her that started hte problem as al the damamge was done to the top of her head which suggests that she was trying to attack him through the pop hole and he has retaliated at the parts he could reach. All the hair from the top of her skull had been torn out, damage has been done to the left eye the main blood supply to her ear has been damaged so tht the tip of it has become brittle and removed by the vet. Thankfully I was here to hear hte fight and seperate them quickly - otherwsie i am afraid that one of them might have been lost. She is currently on 8 differnt types of medication and eye drops - and it remains to be seen if the eye can be saved.
Addtionally, Sago, the homo eb boy that came to us recently has been diagnosed as having a large abcess in his face and chin, the drainage hole first appeared beneath his chin but veterinary investigation revealed that it was inside the skull up into the face and another open drainage hole was inside hte cheek. The abcess had caused a molar to come loose and had also misalligned hte front teeth. The prognosis at present is not good - and he is due to go back to the vets on Tuesday - over 4 days he has lost over 100g - despite eating almost non stop. He is on antibiotics, painkillers and having hte abcess drained and celaned three times a day - but i think that for his own good the vet may recommend that it is better for him to be put to sleep :( Something I am not looking forward to hearing.

» Opps
Well once again it has been a long time since i have made any public diary entries here for people to see.
But al ot has been going on st GreendwoodChinchillas.
2005 has seenthe arrival of a large numberr of kits alreayd -a swell as the dadittion of some top quality animals fro ma variety of breeders to further increase the quality and genetic diversity of the animals we have for breeding - this has also meant the unfortaunte need to sell off some of the other animals that were not such high quality.
Febraury saw the purchase of the herd from CArter Chinchillas - a movement of 24 animas into our own herd - they are still being quarantined and evaluated - but in time some ofthese will be moved into the main herd and tohers will be sold on to offset someof the costs of purachasing the comeplete group. There were 8 ebonys - homo and hetero - in this sale and it has yet to be decided if they shall be kept togehter as a line or split up and sold on.
Following the loss of both sapphire males, Arum and Woad, and being left with no sapphire moales for the breeding progrma, I have worked at acquiring more - and have been lucky enough to do so - one being born and other being brought in as a nrew line to go to the charriersthat I already have.
Two females thankfully were prgnant to Woad prioer to his death and i have been lucky engh to have 2 male and two female carriers born to carry on his lineage - all who are a better size and conformation than their dad was due to the selection of their mothers.
TheCharcoal lines have expanded well - there are currently 4 litters ofcharcoal carriers due in the near future - a hufge expansion to he genetic pool of these animals that I have - they will be from three differnt lines themselves all to differnt unrealted males - so the kits shall be a vast imnprovement and addition to the breeding progrma for next year.
I have also been lucky enogh yto swap one of the male carriers bred last year for an unrelated female carrier - a further genetic expansion - now giving us 4 distint charcoal lines to work with.
It has however left us with a large number of animals - and little space - so over the coming months some ruthless decision making has to be done on letting go odf some of hte lower quality animals in favour of keeping the better kits that are born - a difficult time for us in the making of these decisions and in letting go of stock for ma variety of lines - but in the end for the better good of the herd over all.

» Woads Legacy - 2 Standard Sapphire Carrying Male Kits
Kim produced two standard sapphire carrying kits on 28th January - their dad being Woad the imported sapphire that unfortunately died. They weighed in both over 60g and were both male - so shall be a good new line to the sapphires as none of kims relatives have yet been used in the sapphire lines and now that woad has died it is not going to be possible to get more from himself, unless he has left another female pregnant.
Both kits are strong and doing well.

» More Standard Females Arrive
Took a long trip to Teeside to visit Another NCS breeder Jacci along with Margaret, and picked up some ebs (males and female) and some standards to add to my own breeding lines.
Zena is a standar emale bred by Tom Hanford, she is huge - 900g and a worthy addition to the herd. Grace also arrived - smaller at only 650g but another good animal - she has won amny awards, bred by Joan Davies out of Albatross and Emery lines.
I was due to visit Jen at Cookie Chinchillas as well but got held up so time did not allow it. did p[op in on Jayne (Pixie Chinchilas) though in Chesterfield and dropped off Keoki hewr standard male and a female standard for her.

» Beige and Brown Velvet Charcoal Carriers Arrival
Jan 26th saw the arrival of 4 more animals: A Brown Velvet Charcoal Carrier Male, a Brown Velvet Charcoal Carrier Female, a Beige Charcoal Carrier Female and a Beige Charcoal Carrier Male. They arent related at a parent level to each other though some of hte grandparents are - and they are from totally differnt lines to the charcoals that I already have - so these will prove a very valuable addition to the charcoal lines that I do already have.
Due to the arrival of so many charcoal realted animals that carried beige i sold Walnut a Beige Charcoal carrier form my own lines as it would be more dififuclt to use hiom - i want to try and produce more Standard Charcoal carriers rather than the Beige - that way it will be easier to work on producing the better stringer fur and increasing the other positive attirubtes of the Standard carriers.
I have not yet added their pages to the main www.greenwoodchinchillas.co.uk site as I am in the process or redesigning the whole layout

» Rehomes and mass chin movements
Anorther novice chin breeding friend wsa having to reduce her herd dramatically - so i offered to take on and rehome a lot of hte mfor her - collected 15 of them last week and managed to rehome most of them even before the week was out!
I have kept Jessica a Black Velvet female, Hazel a Tan White Cross and Chloe a beige bred out of Susan Daniels lines (so she is related to some of the animals I already own)
I also collected and rehomed a pair of ebonies for antoher friend Tina, who has lent a few of my animals off me in order to put o hte very good males that she had already bought. Kit sharing on a 50% basis so both on us increase our genetic stock.
The shows have also been running - Sunday 23rd January saw a show down in Essex. It was the first time at this venue and it hada very informative format more suited to novice breeders and pet chin keepers - the truren out was low - but it paid off for me - 8 awards out of 13 animals taken. The best award taken was a 12st ribbon and Novice Best Adult Standard female for Mimosa - so both she nad her sister now have first awards which is a very good acheivment for standards bred out of a white female.

» 2005 arrivals
Well 2005 got off to a good start - on the 4th January, Privet produced a little standard girl. She was born to amale owned by Etherdale Chinchillas from whom i bought Privet - but the brother to Rush which i also bought - so genetically she is the same as if they were paired- so to produce more kits the same if she does well I can do that :) She was called Poinsettia and is developing very well.
The 13th January saw the arrival of not one but two kits! Henna, the brown vevlet, gave birth to a Beige Male called Cinnamon, the father being Karo the grand show champion. This is her second litter and still she hasnt produced a velvet for me - I shal bribe her with raisins for her next litter. He was a good size at birth though did have some damage to his one lid but that has healed nicely after being kept clean in order for it to heal.
Layla also produced a standard female, called Cumin, dad was again Dillon (who has now been lent to Marg as i have so many daughters related to him in the herd already). She is a good size and growing very well - genetically she is the same a s Charlie who won the best young standard award at the national 2001 - so i am hopeful that she too can also do as well.
Cinnamon and Cumin have been born at a very bad tme for showing - age wise they are too young to show this year and will be adults by the time the next season starts in September - so Cinnamon will be going off to a new home with a friend who i do have a shared breeding program with, and Cumin will stay to see how she develops.
the 20th Jan saw the arrival of Betony, she is a Standard possible carrying sapphire. Her parents were Aster (a standard sapphire carrier, Arum and Saffrons daughter) and Dill (a black velvet sapphire carrier). She was born when Aster had been lent out to a friend for a shared breeding program - but we did not know she was pregnant - she gained less than 100g in total over the 4 months of her pregnancy and gave no clear signs of being pregnant!

» New Arrivals to end the year
Since the 12th DEc wheni last updated this, there have been a few new additions :)
On Christmas Eve, Milly produced 2 standard kits, one male and one female, she usually has white females! They have been called Ivy and Mistletoe and their dad was Dillon, who produces many award winning kits.
These two will be up for sale and available for people to reserve. They proved to be the last kits born of 2004 - making 62 kits born in all, tho not all of them unfortunately were born alive or survived.
We had 19 live male and 28 live females born last year - many of whom are at present still here as they were large numbers of sapphire and charcoal carriers that are required for the increase of these breeding programs!

» Updates - Woads Demise
OK so i failed to keep this as up to date as i wouldlike - my excuse? I have been busy planning new breeding programs :)
Well since the show before christmas there have been alot of chin changes here at Greenwood Chinchillas.
The biggest and most worrying was the death of Woad, the sapphire imported from Belgium. With him having been in the country three months this did cause a mini panic but following exhaustive tests and post mortem results- all very costly but essential to anyone that has a sudden death off a newly imported animal - it turns out that he suffered a mjor stroke whihc had been too much for him. He had been having a few saller fits and the vet suggests that these may aso have been stroke related due to the injury that had been done to his head at birth. Investigation with the breeder and another UK breeder that bought his half brother has found that none of the other relatives show any signs of fitting, strokes or other genetic linked problems to Woad which is a very good thing for all of us- as Woad did manage to leave a little present or two behind.
When we went to the SCottish show, Kim (standard female) and Woad were seen to mate in the overnight cage they were staying in - so she couldnt be shown as was rahter out of condition ;) And is now VERY heavily pregnant - going on that date she is due to give birth on 28th Jan - so i am very eagerly awaiting these kits to keep that genetic line of the sapphires going for me.

» Chrsitmas Show 2004
Well the Christmas show proved to be a right disappointment this time.
The judge was Stehpen Helmore - and I dont think he awarded a single 1st award to any novice animals - depsdite the fact that three of hte ones i had taken had got them in the past and 3 others all had seconds! I came away with one Highly Commneded for Mimosa!
A fair few animals went off to new homes too: Dill, Cornflower, Cassia, Orchid and Nightshade were all bought by Pixie Chinchillas And TRacey took delivery of the white ebony femaleoriginally bred by Tessa.
One new arrival also occurred: a Standard FEmale approx 18 months old called Nettle :)

» Mega Catch Up
QWEll its bee na fiar while since i have been keeping this diary up to date - and its very lax of me.
A lot of things have been going on - new arrivals bought in, new chins born, many of the kits have gone off to new homes.
Decisions were made to let go of most of the violet stock to make room to focus on the sapphire and charcoal lines - both of which have increased. Some of the sapphire carriers have been sold off together to a freind who wishes to start working with this colour.
Three new charcoal females have arrived - all of which could potentially be pregnant! Which could be a very large increase to the stock of pure charcoals in the country that still remain.
Many animals have gone off to tmporary homes on loan - wit ha view to obtaining back 50% of hte kits produced - this enables me to increase the genetic stock of my own herd whilst other people also do the same - the list of which animals have been loaned out to be people I trust are on the Our Chins site.
New kits that have arrived include Tallow and Tumeric- a white and standard from Tiggy and Karo who i expect good awards from in the future Thistle produced a violet and a stadnard carrier male - called Frankincense and Myrrh.
Many of the kits have obtained good awards at the recent shows, the best being Lily who received a Reserve Best Young Standard Female award in the main show at Portsmouth November 2004.
Other awards that have been received (and that I can remember off the top of my head) were for Acacia, Balsam, Broom, Carmellia, Cassia, Dillon, Hemlock, Lily, Mimosa, Rosie.
Imports have arrived from Germany (2 std females), Holland (Black Velvet Sapphire Carrier Female), and the USA (Black Velvet Female, Pink White Male and Standard ribbon winning male)
Other older breeding females have also arrived from Paul Spooner and Etherdale Chinchillas- as well as a top quality male Standard from ED as well.
Charlie and Lizzy have also returned from the homes where they had been staying recently.

» (No Subject)
Caraway has now gone off to live with Tessa- she collected him on Sunday, andarrived at teh same time as Carla was giving birth.
Carla my pink white had a huge 75g male beige mosaic - unfortuantely he was very large and she had problems which meant he was delivered dead - despite my attempts to revive him. She thankfully was ok - but did panic me as took almost 2 hours to pass the afterbirth.
Doing a weigh in suggests that thre are another 7 litters due - going by weight gains!
Tomorrow sees the colection of the chins from Holland! So should have their pages updated and online tomorrow night

» Bellas Birth - one kit born dead
Bella my 2nd award winning black velvet today gave birth to a male standard sapphire carrier - but unfortunately by the time i was aware of it it had died. It has been delivered two weeks earlier than i had expected, going on the date of a mating that I had observed, and i think it was not totaly viable at its birth as when i weighed it it was only 35g and its eyes still closed. but form the state of the fur it had been up and moving about at birth as it swas all fluffy and not stuck to the cage as they often are.
Bella was being very strange wit hthe dead kit, she was keeping it warm and trying to nurse it - but obviously not getting very far. When I removed it she was very placid and dcile normaly she gets stressed nad barks at me when i go in her cage until i give her a stroke and calm her down. but today she just sat there and once the kit was removed spent time trying to hunt it down. As the kit was already totaly dry when i found it it is most likely that Bella has hada breeed back with Arum as the pop hole was not yet closed due to my not expecting the kit. So though she has lost her kit i cannot move one of the triplet char carriers to her to give somethng to her to care for as she may well be pregnant again and two lots of resources going on growing a kit and feeding milk would be far too much on her already minral deprived body following this first pregnancy.
This afternon she hads been snuggling up to Arum, her mate, and seems to have forgotten about the kit again - which is good. So i hope that she soons gets back to her own sassy self and starts peeing at me again soon to proce shes back on top form :)
Addtionally today I also received more information on the three animals that I picked up from Paul Spooner at he show last weekend - i have the pedigrees now, details of their last litters and what awards they had won themselves - so have created their new web pages and added them into the site :)

» Sigyns departure
Sigyn has been purchased and gone off to live with Margaret as well now as a further step in reducing the violet lines here - that brings me down to Spike and Thistle who are paired together, Teasal he whit violet who is reserved for tasha, and annie the BV VC that is one of the oldies in the retirement cage.
Comfrey and Anise - both Sapphire carrying Standards have also been reserved
Sunday should also see the departure of Caraway who is off to live with Tessa, I was intending to keep him to further the breeding program here, but with the new US male arriving and the arrival of Woad the saphpire male, the good females are going to be tied up already so it make more sense to rehome hm now wit ha view to getting a kit back in the future.
Bart is also going to be lent out for a short time to Jess on a kit share basis with a view to increasing her lines and the genetic stock of kits that can be returned.
